Are Treds as good as MAXTRAX?
Overall from the general comments when asking our fans of their preference it seems MaxTrax has a slightly better reputation and is used by more people than we spoke to over TRED. MaxTrax seems to have more storage and accessory options when it comes to linking and harnessing the tracks into place.

The MAXTRAX product was the best self-recovery device, outperforming all the others on the day. Its only downside is its lack of bridging ability. If I were in a pickle, however, I would just stack a couple on top of each other for added strength.
Are traction boards worth it?
They’re easy to carry, they’re easy-to-use, and they can get you out of some pretty sticky situations. I’ve used my traction boards in sand, mud, snow, and I’ve used them doubled up as a bridge between two rocks that would have swallowed my tire whole in a slot canyon in Anza Borrego State Park in California.

You’ll need to buy two ideally, although having four isn’t overkill if you have the room to store them in or on your 4WD. The principle of recovery tracks is that they are designed to slot in front of the bogged wheel and provide a grippy surface to drive onto.
