C. difficile diarrhea may be treated with a course of antibiotics prescribed by your doctor and taken by mouth. Once you have completed treatment and diarrhea is resolved, your infection is no longer contagious and you no longer need to take any special precautions.

How long should a patient or an employee with C. diff be restricted from work or group activities? When possible, a person with active diarrhea caused by a C. diff infection should be restricted from work or group activities for 48 hours after diarrhea has resolved.

Is C. diff contagious? Yes, but most healthy adults who come in contact with C. diff won’t get sick.
How long is C. diff contagious on surfaces?
C. difficile spores can be shed to the environment by both asymptomatic and symptomatic patients and may survive for up to 5 months on inanimate surfaces (17).
Can I pass C. diff to my family?
There is a slight chance of spreading C. difficile to a family member, especially if one is sick. Cleaning your hands well before and after contact with each other will help prevent the spread of C.
Is C. diff contagious after treatment?
diff after completing treatment is low. But if you’re carrying the germ even without symptoms (see the “Your Risk of C. diff” page), you can still spread it to others. So always wash your hands with soap and water before you eat and after you use the bathroom.
Can I go out in public if I have C. diff?
Infected children should stay home from day care until 24 hours after diarrhea has stopped. You do not need to notify parents, other teachers, or the health department about a child who has C. diff. Infected children can use public restrooms.
Do you need to quarantine if you have C. diff?
Isolate patients with possible C. diff immediately, even if you only suspect CDI. Wear gloves and a gown when treating patients with C. diff, even during short visits.

Yes – you can still have visitors. In general, exposure to C diff does not cause infection in healthy people; this includes pregnant women, babies and children. Casual contact such as hugging and kissing is OK. Being diagnosed with C.
