The Restart Scheme is a new £2.9 billion funding scheme commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Its’ aim is to give enhanced support to Universal Credit claimants aged 18 and above and who have been unemployed for 12 to 18 months.

Who is eligible for the restart scheme?

In most instances, to be eligible for Restart Scheme, a participant must: Be on Universal Credit in the Intensive Work Search Regime (IWSR) for between 12 months and 18 months (19 months), with time in receipt of new style Jobseekers Allowance counting towards this. Have no sustained earnings at the point of referral.

The amount you can ask for will depend on your first estimated Universal Credit monthly payment. The cost of your advance will need to be spread across your monthly Universal Credit payments. This means you could receive 25 payments in 24 months or 13 payments in 12 months depending on when you applied.
