In an interview on his website, Itoi describes how his inspiration for the final battle with Giygas in EarthBound resulted from a traumatic childhood event where he accidentally viewed the wrong movie at a theater, a Shintoho film entitled Kenpei to Barabara Shibijin.
How did Giegue become Giygas?
Giygas, known as Giegue in EarthBound Beginnings, was an alien raised from infancy by a woman named Maria and her husband George, both of whom were abducted from Earth in the early 1900s. During this time, George studied the alien’s PSI powers without their permission, culminating with his sudden return to Earth.
How powerful is Giygas?
In Mother 2/EarthBound, Giygas can now only be described as pure evil. Much worse than PSI power, he is now virtually all-powerful, enough to transcend Time and Space and destroy the universe, with total control over darkness and evil.
Why is Ness named Ness?
Ness suffers from homesickness, whereas his predecessor Ninten has Asthma. Ness’s name originates from either the NES or SNES, being an anagram of the latter, or another way to spell the former. Notably, Ninten, the protagonist of the original Mother, was named after the company Nintendo.

It appears Ness’s resemblance to Ninten was left as ambiguous by Shigesato Itoi intentionally as he intended for players to decide if they’re the same character or different, he seems to have even suggested for players to think of them as the same.
