Why did Edmonia Lewis leave Oberlin College?
In 1859 she attended Oberlin College in Ohio, one of the first schools to accept female and Black students. She developed an interest in the fine arts, but an accusation of poisoning, probably racially motivated, forced Lewis to leave the school before graduating.

Much is not known about the end of Lewis’s life. She disappeared from the public eye in the 1880s. It is not known if she ever married or had children. Only recently has Lewis’s biographer, Marilyn Richardson, found that Lewis died in London on September 17, 1907 of Bright’s Disease.
