If you’re studying, training or doing an Australian Apprenticeship, you may get one of these payments: Youth Allowance for students and apprentices is financial help if you’re a student or apprentice aged 24 or younger.
Can you get Youth Allowance and Austudy?
You can only get Austudy or Youth Allowance as a student for a set amount of time. We call this allowable time. If your study load is 75% instead of 100% you may run out of allowable time. This means you may not get your student payment for the whole time it takes to finish your course.
How much Centrelink do you get for studying?
You’ll get $62.40 a fortnight if you’re an approved student studying full time. You’ll also get this amount if you’re an approved student studying at least a 50% full time course load. And you get one of the following payments: Youth Allowance, JobSeeker Payment or Parenting Payment Partnered in certain circumstances.
Does Youth Allowance automatically change to Austudy?
If you’re getting Youth Allowance as a student or Australian Apprentice at the time you turn 25, you won’t move to Austudy. You’ll keep getting Youth Allowance until you finish your current course or apprenticeship. Austudy is an income support payment.
How do students get money from Centrelink?

If you get Youth Allowance as a job seeker you can earn money and still get your payment. We’ll start to reduce your payment if your income is more than $150 a fortnight. Your payment will reduce by 50 cents for each dollar of income you have between $150 and $250.

Eligibility for student payments is the same whether you study through distance education or on campus. You must have a full time study load to get Youth Allowance, Austudy or ABSTUDY Living Allowance.

Can I get Youth Allowance if my parents earn too much?
The amount of Youth Allowance you are entitled to receive will be reduced once your parent/s taxable income exceeds $54, 677. If your parents have other dependent children, their taxable income be considered to affect your rate of payment.
