What was Cox fuel made of?
The fuel used to power the engine is called Model Engine Fuel, a mixture of methanol (70–40%), castor oil (20%) and nitromethane (10–40%). The Cox line of reed valve engines designed prior to 1960 used a rear reed valve induction system.
How do you make a Cox fuel engine?
Cox recommends a fuel mix containing 20% castor oil. To be on the safe side, we recommend at least 10% castor oil and 10% synthetic oil. The upside of using a 50/50 castor/syn mix is that it will help reduce varnishing and leave less oil residue on the model.
How do you start a .049 engine?
- check your fuel.
- Forget hand flipping it.
- Fill the tank.
- Close the needle valve all the way, then open it 4 turns.
- connect the glow plug clip.
- With the piston at top dead center, squirt a drop of fuel into the exhaust port.
What is model airplane fuel?
Model engine fuel is typically 8-22% oil, with the higher percentages run in older design two-stroke glow engines that use bushings for the crankshaft bearings. The most commonly used lubricants are castor oil and synthetic oils, and many glow fuels include a mixture of the two.
How do you disassemble a Cox 049 engine?
RE: .049 Disassembly
- Remove the cylinder.
- Remove the backplate and tank if any – this can be done first or now.
- With the cylinder removed, turn the crank so the piston/rod is fully exposed.
- Turn the prop screw into the crank until it bottoms out.
- Get a block of wood or flat piece of plywood.

How do you make nitromethane?
Preparation. Nitromethane is produced industrially by combining propane and nitric acid in the gas phase at 350–450 °C (662–842 °F). This exothermic reaction produces the four industrially significant nitroalkanes: nitromethane, nitroethane, 1-nitropropane, and 2-nitropropane.
How do you clean a glowing engine?
No need to rince, just wipe the parts off with a rag and use a brush to remove caked on tarnish. I hve also used acetone on motors that aren’t so dirty and found also tha it really works well with cleaning out the internal portions of the crank, bearings etc. I also agree with good old carb cleaner!
How do I make Glo fuel?
Easy enough to do, one measure nitro, one measure castor three parts methanol. If you can mix fuel for a 2 stroke lawn mower/chainsaw/weed eater then you can mix glow fuel. My fuel is simple because I don’t use nitro so my standard brew is to add 1 part of oil to 4 parts of methanol, shake well and go fly .

What is a Cox 049 used for?
Many of us first started into the hobby with a Cox plastic control line model, and many RCers have used the venerable Cox .049 in various forms to power small aircraft, gliders or even helicopters. I started into the world of model airplanes with a Cox Blue Angels RTF model in 1977.
Can you run a 049 on 10% fuel?
Yes, you can get an .049 to run on 10% but the needle is more finicky and it just isn’t content, so why bother for the few cc it takes per run? 20-25% makes them much happier. IIRC the Cox brand fuels are 22% castor?
