Can you skin up Fortress Mountain?

We get asked if you can skin up the 7 km road in winter and get in some turns; yes, you can. But, since they road is actively used by vehicles and often has film crews on it, you would be VERY wise to ask Fortress first.

What is Catskiing?

Cat skiing is a form of guided backcountry exploration, taking you away from the borders of controlled ski areas to ride through untouched powder. Rather than using a helicopter to access the backcountry, a snowcat acts as your lift, which makes it far cheaper than heli-skiing for an equally heroic outcome.

In 2004, the resort closed due to falling revenue. A new company, Banff Rail Co., bought it and reopened for a short time in 2006 but the province ordered it to stop selling passes until an unsafe bridge was fixed. The province revoked the company’s lease in 2007.
