Can you skin up Fortress Mountain?
We get asked if you can skin up the 7 km road in winter and get in some turns; yes, you can. But, since they road is actively used by vehicles and often has film crews on it, you would be VERY wise to ask Fortress first.
What is Catskiing?
Cat skiing is a form of guided backcountry exploration, taking you away from the borders of controlled ski areas to ride through untouched powder. Rather than using a helicopter to access the backcountry, a snowcat acts as your lift, which makes it far cheaper than heli-skiing for an equally heroic outcome.
Is Fortress Mountain Resort Open?
The resort has been closed since 2004, and a recent film by Black Crows has peaked interest. I highly recommend you check out ‘the ghost ski resorts | fortress | chapter two’. It highlights the beauty, history, and prestige of Fortress. A new owner is aiming to reopen the mountain in December of 2023.
Why did Fortress Mountain close?
In 2004, the resort closed due to falling revenue. A new company, Banff Rail Co., bought it and reopened for a short time in 2006 but the province ordered it to stop selling passes until an unsafe bridge was fixed. The province revoked the company’s lease in 2007.
What happened to Fortress ski hill?
Alberta’s Fortress Mountain was in operation from 1967 to 2004. Almost 20 years later the lodge, its chairlifts, and other signs of the abandoned resort are still mostly intact.

You can not, for example, skin up the front side of Lake Louise since the resort is not limiting your access to the backcountry. For resorts outside of the National Park there are often strict “no uphill traffic” rules in place and when breaking this rule you are trespassing in most cases.

The resort eventually sold to the Skiing Louise Group and then to Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR). It evaluated the resort and decided that due to poor snow leading to a short season, aging infrastructure and a lack of reinvestment potential, it would close the hill in 2003.

Why does Gary sound like a cat?
Snails are the underwater equivalent of cats in SpongeBob SquarePants, so Gary meows and purrs (as seen in the episode “Dumped”) like a cat. Gary is SpongeBob’s playful pet snail and loves to play with him a lot.
What breed of cat is Gary?
Specifically, Gary is a five-year-old rescued domestic long-haired “meowtain lion” who was adopted from the Calgary Humane Society and now lives and hikes in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. While most cats are content to stay indoors and look for warm laps and fishy treats, Gary enjoys the great outdoors.
