Can I use ROWAphos with carbon?
Answer: It is possible to use Rowaphos and carbon in the same reactor as chemically they will not have an impact on each other. We would however not reccomend it for a couple of reasons. ROWAphos will generally require a slower throughput of water compared to carbon.
How effective is ROWAphos?
In an independent series of tests carried out by the Berlin Technical University on the five most commonly used phosphate removers at the time, RowaPhos was found to be the most efficient in removing phosphate from water. Other medias tested reached only to 30 – 40 % of its removal capacity by weight.

How much ROWAphos do I need?
Answer: ROWA suggest around 100g per 400L on a saltwater aquarium and 100g per 800L on a freshwater aquarium. If the aquarium is heavily stocked then this ammount can be increased by 30% but it is best to use small amounts that is changed more frequently than large amounts changed less frequently.
Can you mix Phosguard and carbon in same reactor?
Totally fine running both in the same reactor.
Can I mix GFO and carbon?
Agreed, You do not tumble the GFO when combining it with carbon. The reason why you tumble GFO alone is to prevent it from becoming a solid mass . The mixture of carbon separates the GFO enough so it doesn’t solidify.
Does ROWAphos reduce nitrates?
Rowaphos is iron oxide hudroxide. It doesn’t reduce nitrate.
Do you need to rinse ROWAphos?
Note: Do not rinse Rowaphos before use! In some cases the use of Rowaphos can turn the aquarium water slightly brown in color due to the dislocation of finer particles of the material. This is completely harmless for fish or any other organisms and will disappear after a short period of time.

As long as it didn’t dry out, it is fine. If it dried out (maybe the color change), it might have less capacity.
Can you run Purigen and carbon together?
It is safe to use Purigen® alongside most Seachem® products except for medications, which should never be used with any type of chemical filter media (carbon, phosphate absorbers, etc).
Can I use carbon and Purigen together?
They can definately be used together, and also using carbon should make your Purigen last a lot longer. I use both. They do different things for the most part. If you had to choose, I would use a very good grade carbon first, and purigen second.
Can you run carbon and Gfo in the same reactor?
Ideal to run in two because carbon can eventually give off a tiny, tiny bit of PO4 but yes you can run them together.
Does Gfo have to tumble?
GFO comes in two types: Granular GFO is varied in its shapes and requires the least amount of flow to tumble.

Clownfish. If fluidized in a reactor it will work very quickly. You should see a change within a day or so.

The reality for someone blindly using RowaPhos is that they start off at 5 ppm and reduce it to 4 ppm by using the wrong sized pack, which they replace after 2 – 3 months by which time the concentration has returned to or exceeded its original level.

An efficient skimmer will remove dissolved and particulate organic matter, improving water quality and limiting phosphates and nitrates.
Can you run too much carbon in a reef tank?
Using too much carbon is strictly based on your current levels of nutrients. If your nutrients are high, and you throw a bunch of carbon at it which will bottom them out, you will most likely run into issues with any sensitive livestock.
How fast will Gfo reduce phosphates?

Does ROWAphos lower alkalinity?
If you over dose Rowaphos and pull down PO4 rapidly you may find that Calcium and Alkalinity will start to precipitate locally at the media surface and you will see a drop in Alkalinity in the aquarium, this will be made all the worse if your Magnesium is also low.
