What is a radial EUS?
Radial ultrasound is a diagnostic tool used to assess anatomy of the GI tract and surrounding structures. This type of imaging provides a 360 degree, cross-sectional view of the GI tract and is primarily used for screening.
What is a EUS scope?
An EUS scope is advanced within the gastrointestinal tract against, or in close proximity to, the pancreas. From a position in the stomach or duodenum, the endoscope allows visualization of the pancreas and adjacent structures. There are two types of EUS scopes: radial scanning and linear array.
Is an EUS the same as an endoscopy?
A regular endoscope is a thin, lighted tube that can be inserted through the mouth or anus to view inside your esophagus, stomach or intestines. EUS uses a special endoscope with a small ultrasound device on its tip, called an echoendoscope.
Why would a doctor order an endoscopic ultrasound?
Your doctor can use EUS to diagnose certain conditions that may cause abdominal pain or abnormal weight loss. EUS is also used to evaluate known abnormalities, including lumps or lesions, which were detected at a prior endoscopy or were seen on x-ray tests, such as a computed tomography (CT) scan.
Which is better endoscopy or ultrasound?
Placing the transducer on the tip of an endoscope allows the transducer to get close to the organs inside the body. Because of the proximity of the EUS transducer to the organ(s) of interest, the images obtained are frequently more accurate and more detailed than the ones obtained by traditional ultrasound.
How long does an EUS procedure take?
An upper EUS test is an outpatient procedure. You’ll go home the same day. Because you receive a sedative (anesthesia), someone needs to drive you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day. An upper EUS procedure takes about 60 minutes.
Is EUS painful?
An EUS does not usually hurt but it can be a little uncomfortable, particularly when you first swallow the endoscope.

How do I prepare for an EUS procedure?
- You may have diet and/or medication restrictions the week before the EUS test.
- You will not be allowed any heavy meal for at least 8 hours before the procedure, light meals or opaque liquids for 6 hours before, or clear liquids for at least 2 hours before.
- Plan to take the day off from work.
