In 2007, the co-founders of Honor Flight Chicago came together to launch a local hub in the fledgling Honor Flight Network. Our first trip with 60 WWII veterans took place in June of 2008 under their leadership, and our mission has evolved and grown ever since into what it is today.
When was the last Honor Flight?
The last Honor Flight was on October 26, 2019. The organization takes Indiana military veterans to DC to visit war memorials. Byron Temple, a Vietnam Air Force veteran who currently lives in Beech Grove, is on the trip.
What veterans are eligible for Honor Flight?
Who is eligible to apply for an Honor Flight? Veterans who have served during war time are eligible to apply with HFDFW. To be considered by the VA to have served during wartime, a veteran need not have served in a combat zone, but simply during one of these designated periods.
How much does it cost to send a veteran on Honor Flight?

How do you become an Honor Flight Guardian?
Guardian Application
To serve as a guardian, you must complete this application and attend guardian training. Guardians must also pay the guardian fee. Guardians must be between age 18 and 70 on flight date to be eligible. Guardians may not be a spouse or significant other of any veteran on the flight.
What is the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight?
Land of Lincoln Honor Flight is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that receives no government funding. It is only able to honor veterans due to donations, sponsorships, fundraising events, merchandise sales and supporting efforts of the many local businesses, individuals and organizations within its service area.
How much does it cost for a guardian on an Honor Flight?
Are there any requirements in order to be a guardian? You need to pay your cost of the trip. The current cost is $1500 which covers air and land transportation, food, lodging, attraction entrance fees, flight bag, jacket, and t-shirts. Payment is not due until you are assigned to a trip.

How are you chosen for Honor Flight?
Veterans are chosen based on when they served in the US Military. Currently first priority is given to WWII veterans, followed by Korea War veterans. Veterans within the same war era are prioritized by the date that the application is received. Veterans serving between war eras are also eligible.
Do veterans fly for free?
Service members and their families can use Space-Available flights – formally known as Military Airlift Command or MAC flights – to travel around the country and world at little or no cost.
Can spouses go on Honor Flight?
A: The only spouses who are permitted to go are those who are veterans themselves. We do not have the resources, funding, or seating available to transport all the veterans who are presently on our waiting list. Adding spouses simply isn’t an option for our program. Q: I am the widow of a veteran.
What should I bring on an Honor Flight?
You’ll need a government ID along for flight. This can be your state issues driver’s license (highly recommended), passport, or military ID. A light jacket may be something you’d like for our time on flight – you’ll need to take it off the plane and keep it with you but may be left on your bus for the day.

The inaugural Honor Flight took place in May of 2005. Six small planes flew out of Springfield, Ohio taking twelve World War II veterans on a journey to visit their memorial in Washington, DC.
Do veterans get TSA PreCheck free?
PreCheck is free for US military servicemembers. Just use your DOD ID number from the back of your CAC as your “known travel” number. You can also use credit cards that include TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit as a benefit.
Do veterans get priority boarding?
Active military may board with priority boarding at no charge. Active military will not be charged a change or cancelation fee due to a change in orders. (To change or cancel an existing reservation active military personnel must contact Customer Care.)
Are Honor Flights overnight?
Overnight stays are required. We will book a room with two double beds so the guardian can stay with the veteran. The guardian must complete a guardian application. Due to the generosity of the Talking Rain® beverage company all travel expenses for the veteran and the guardian have been covered by the donor.
Where does the Honor Flight take you?
The Honor Flight Network is currently serving veterans who served from World War II to the Korean War and through to Vietnam. We also serve catastrophically ill and injured veterans from all service eras.
What can I expect on an Honor Flight?
The two-day trip begins with a celebratory send-off, including a presentation of the colors, and volunteers cheering and waving flags. The men and women who comprise the veteran group wear their signature blue Honor Flight DFW jackets, shirts and hats, often with their war medals pinned to them.

Bags. Depending on your destination, bags are free of charge with active U.S. military ID: Up to 5 bags 100 lbs each for active U.S. military and / or dependents traveling on orders. Up to 3 bags 50 lbs each for active U.S. military on personal / leisure travel.
