Can you overtighten compression fitting?
Hold the compression fitting body tightly with a pair of grips and tighten the nut with a spanner. Its often said in the trade to not over tighten a compression fitting, leaving you more thread in the case of a leak and not distorting the olive or fitting. Generally a nut will need one whole turn after hand tightening.
Do compression fittings work on soft tubing?
Compression fittings have to be used with hard or semi rigid tubing. Soft tubing is too soft to create a good seal with compression fittings. Barbed fittings have to be used with soft flexible tubing. Using hard tubing with barbs will cause longitudinal stress cracks in the tubing.
Do you need to use jointing compound on compression fittings?
Thread sealants such as joint compound (pipe dope or thread seal tape such as PTFE tape) are unnecessary on compression fitting threads, as it is not the thread that seals the joint but rather the compression of the ferrule between the nut and pipe.
Can you use compression fittings on poly pipe?
What types of tubing can be connected? Compression fittings are ideal to be used with annealed copper, aluminum, PEX, polyethylene and nylon tubing that is manufactured to CTS (Copper Tube Size).
Should I use PTFE tape on compression fittings?
Can I Use PTFE Tape on Compression Fittings? No. PTFE tape is not designed to seal compression fittings and is ineffective at doing so.
Should you use Teflon tape on compression fittings?
“Should I use PTFE thread sealing tape or pipe joint compound on my compression threads?” A. No, you definitely should not. PTFE tape and pipe joint compound (also known as “pipe dope”) should only be used on “IPS” (“iron pipe size”) threads, which are normal pipe threads.
Do you need PTFE tape on compression fittings?
Use none, there is no need at all for PTFE on compression fittings,it is for going on threads. If you want, use a bit of boss blue/white on the fitting depending what it is being used for. It looks terrible seeing a compression fitting with ptfe tape sticking out of it or wrapped on the pipe. Heat likes this.

Can you use compression fittings on polybutylene?
Qest compression fittings by Zurn can be used to connect gray polybutylene, PEX, CPVC or copper tubing in any combination. These are one of the few fittings that can be used with gray polybutylene plastic tubing. Polybutylene was often used in manufactured homes.
Should I use Teflon tape on compression fittings?
Why do my compression fittings leak?
Over tightening a compression fitting can also cause the fitting to leak. When tightening up the compression fitting, only turn your tool until you feel resistance. From there, you shouldn’t turn it anymore than a half a turn. By doing this, you can ensure you’ll prevent your compression fitting from leaking.

Can you use metal compression fittings with plastic pipe?
Many, but not all, compression fittings are suitable for use with plastic fittings and pipe. Users should therefore check for compatibility. Compression fittings with short tube stop depth or hard olives should not be used with plastic fittings or pipe.
Is polybutylene pipe the same size as PEX?
PB has the same outside diameter as PEX of the same nominal size, but outside diameters differ slightly between the tubing types. This means that you should not use PEX fittings on polybutylene, but that you can use PEX crimping rings and PEX crimping tools on barbed PB connections.

Can you use compression fittings on PEX pipe?
Compression Fittings
A compression fitting may be an appropriate choice. A brass sleeve and nut are installed over the end of the PEX pipe or CTS tubing, and then the pipe is inserted into the fitting. When the brass nut is tightened the sleeve creates a compression seal.
How many times do you wrap PTFE tape?
When applying the tape clockwise, it’s recommended that you wrap it around the thread three or four times. This is thick enough to prevent leaks, but not too thick that you can’t get the nut on.
Is all GREY pipe polybutylene?
Polybutylene pipes used for interior applications are generally gray in color but may also be black. PB pipes used outside may be gray, blue or black. PB pipe is flexible, not rigid. Polybutylene pipes may be stamped with the code: PB2110.
How tight should PEX compression fittings be?
Slide the nut and O-ring toward the fitting and tighten the compression nut over the fitting by hand (~ 2 full turns). Position one crescent wrench over the fitting and the other over the compression nut. Tighten the compression nut (~ 1-1.5 full turns).
