If you like the idea of being able to play this classic without suffering for the fact that it’s an old game, then this is a good purchase. On balance, it’s a better remaster than most. But it’s also hard to recommend Total War: Rome Remastered to anyone who hasn’t already played the original.

Not a remake. They’re better by leagues, with lots of sad building models getting remade, especially on the campaign map, but they’re nothing compared to any modern Total War. The battles especially just look lackluster because the battlefields are so bare of features.

The 4K graphics and complete remodelling of units look absolutely incredible but it’s the core gameplay that makes it so exceptional. Specifically, the main campaign will be the focus here, though the Barbarian Invasion expansion is similarly excellent.
