What is the history of Belton House?
PRINCIPAL BUILDING Belton House (listed grade I), of three storeys in Ancaster and Ketton ashlar with a hipped slate roof, was designed by William Winde (d 1722) and built between 1685 and 1688 by William Stanton. The old manor house had been demolished in 1684 and the stone was re-used in the new house.
Why is Belton House famous?
Belton was one of the first houses to create a central block two rooms deep, the so-called ‘double pile’ design. This allowed for more light, greater privacy, and easier roof construction. The Brownlow and Cust families owned the house for over 300 years before it passed to the National Trust in 1984.
