What happened to Cowdray Ruins?

Cowdray House Ruins Today

Today, the ruined house is protected, and owes it still standing to the 1st Viscount Cowdray who commissioned a restoration project between 1909 and 1914. Cowdray ruins remain in the Cowdray family, with the 4th Viscount Cowdray furthering its restoration and preservation.

How did Cowdray Castle burn down?

In September 1793, whilst undergoing repairs and refurbishments for the impending marriage of the 8th Viscount Montague, a devastating fire took hold and most of the property was destroyed. The Kitchen Tower is the only part of the mansion to remain intact today.
