In 1978 middle and high schools in New Jersey had a competition using Dr. Sam’s problems. This was the first of its kind and OM was born. From that first competition in NJ, OM™ grew and is still expanding through the U.S. and the world.

The OM Association will administer a new but similar creative tournament called Destination ImagiNation, created during the legal battle by former Odyssey of the Mind volunteers who feared the old program would die. The partnership was to receive final approval this week at a meeting in Chicago.
How do I start an Odyssey of the Mind team?
Starting a Team
Generate interest in the Odyssey program. Purchase a state membership from SoCal Odyssey Association for $85, which is required of each national membership to participate in the SoCAL Odyssey of the Mind program. Each team competing in a Regional Tournament pays a registration fee per team.
Can homeschoolers do Odyssey of the Mind?
Students are welcome to participate through home schools, public and private schools, and through community groups such as a church, Rotary, etc.

Primary – Non-competitive but may showcase at a tournament for feedback. Grades K-2 (U.S.). Less than 8 years of age on May 1, 2022. Division I – Grades K-5 (U.S.): Less than 12 years of age on May 1, 2023 (Other International).
