There are two brands of birth control patches available in the U.S.: the Xulane patch and the Twirla patch.
Is the patch the safest birth control?
If you use it perfectly, the patch is 99% effective. But people aren’t perfect, and it can be easy to make a mistake — so in reality, the patch is about 91% effective. That means about 9 out of 100 patch users get pregnant each year.

Is Twirla or Xulane better?
Twirla was found to be more effective in women with a lower BMI. The pregnancy rate per 100 woman-years of Xulane use was 1.07 (95% CI 0.6-, 1.76). Xulane is thought to be less effective in women with a higher BMI. In a year-long phase 3 trial, 5% of all the Twirla patches (55,900) worn fully detached.
Does the patch hurt?
The most common side effects are spotting or bleeding between periods, sore breasts, nausea, or headaches. But these usually go away after 2 or 3 months, and they don’t happen to everyone who uses the patch. Birth control shouldn’t make you feel sick or uncomfortable.

Currently, Xulane is the only birth control patch sold in the United States. If you have an existing prescription from your healthcare provider, you can purchase it from many pharmacies.
What are the disadvantages of the patch?
Disadvantages: it may be visible. it can cause skin irritation, itching and soreness. it doesn’t protect you against STIs, so you may need to use condoms as well.
Does the patch make u depressed?
All forms of hormonal contraception were associated with an increased risk of developing depression, with higher risks associated with the progesterone-only forms, including the IUD. This risk was higher in teens ages 15 to 19, and especially for non-oral forms of birth control such as the ring, patch and IUD.
