What is a cylinder hone tool?
Cylinder Hones
Honing is used to improve the texture of a surface or improve the geometric form of the surface. The scratches left in the metal surface after honing help to assist in retaining oil and improving lubrication, performance and cylinder life. Cylinder hones work well with most common metals.
What are three types of hones?
Hones and honing tools are abrasive products used to refine the finish of internal bores and external surfaces. There are three basic types: flexible hones, hand hones, and honing sticks or tools.
Which material can be honed?
Any abrasive material may be used to create a honing stone, but the most commonly used are corundum, silicon carbide, cubic boron nitride, and diamond. The choice of abrasive material is usually driven by the characteristics of the workpiece material.
What Grit is a cylinder hone?
In the case of most automotive combustion cylinders, 120 grit works for older cast ring sets or where the cylinder has been re-bored and is a little rough. Hones with 180 to 240 grits are good choices for general deglazing where the cylinder is not going to be bored or honed.

What can I use instead of honing oil?
Various types of vegetable oils, mineral oil, industrial cleaner, window cleaner, and the old reliable water. As long as the liquid is light and will not harden, it will serve as a good alternative for honing oil. While the term might seem off, honing oil isn’t actually always oil.
Should I use oil with a cylinder hone?
Don’t skimp by applying a few drops of honing oil. Instead, lubricate the Flex-Hone® tool generously. Proper lubrication helps keep heat to a minimum, prevents the tool from loading, and suspends the abrasive material. Also, apply the lubricant prior to rotating the tool and entering the cylinder bore.
How do you clean a cylinder after honing?
Cleaning a honed cylinder
Best results are achieved by scrubbing with a nylon brush and hot soapy water. Kerosene, brake clean or petrol is not effective. After cleaning, check by wiping with clean engine oil and a clean white cloth which should not come out grey!
