Also like the name suggests, the cane comes pre-woven in sheets. It is also called “pressed” cane because of the way it is installed- by pressing the sheet of cane into the grove in the wood. What you’ll be looking for is evidence of a continuous grove in the wood where the cane attaches to the chair.

To attach the cane to the back of the frames, I used a wooden trim cut to the same size as my frame. First I cut the cane to size, then glued the cane to the frame with wood glue and then sandwiched the cane between the frame and the trim, using some short screws to keep it all in place.

How do you flatten caning?
Lay the cane sheet over the seat & straighten as best as you can, from front to back. Trim off excess to about 1″ all the way around. Soak the cane & binder for about 15-20 minutes in warm water. Remove several diagonal strands from the corners of the sheet cane to allow more flexibility.
